A haitian girl is having a hard time getting used to New York without her family, while her uncle does'nt make it easy by prohibiting her to see any kids after school. An american boy named Alex is trying to avoid the popular kids at school while looking for a romantic way to make the new haitian girl, Bijou, notice him. This is the story of Bijou Doucet and Alex Schrader better known as "A song for Bijou" by Josh Farrar. After some time, both Alex's and Bijou's friend find a way to get them into a secret date with neither of their families knowing. After confesing their love for each other, the popular kids make a bad joke by posting a video where Alex appears with his friends making some rude comments about the haitian culture. Bijou is hurt by it and so is her uncle. Jou Jou, Bijou's big brother, helps Alex put together a great show where both of them will be playing Rara music, a type of haitian music. That is Alex's way of saying sorry to Bijou.
I think the author did a good job on this book. It does contain conflicts of real life like mixing two people from two different cultures together like haitian and american, and creating a relationship despite that their families forbid it, like uncle Pierre's rule about seeing other kids after school. I would reccomend this book to readers who love romantic stories or that like to know about culture because this book contains plenty of both. I read some more complex books after this one and personally I think those books made this story look more childish, It is worth reading, though.
